Education Plus Nicaragua

The Education Plus Mission is to provide the children of Pantanal, Nicaragua with food, education, and activities in order to eliminate malnutrition, instill core values, and give them the resources and opportunities they need to rise above their impoverished circumstances.

In June 2014, our community centre Casa de los Sueños (CDS) opened to the joy of nearly 200 children and their parents.  Here we provide food, education, and activities in order to eliminate malnutrition, instill core values, and give them the resources they need to rise above their impoverished circumstances.  We offer our children a safe haven that keeps them off the streets, and exciting opportunities that keep them into education. In a country with the highest primary school dropout rate in Central America, our students believe that going to university is within their reach. Not only that, the children arrive to our program overjoyed to be there.  Instead of hunger, what these children – the “forgotten children” – now have, is hope.

“I have witnessed first-hand the enormous difference Education Plus makes in the lives of Nicaragua’s neediest children. Education Plus is a haven in the midst of Granada’s worst slum and its staff people are modern-day heroes. They transform little lives with just pennies and their incredible work is truly heartwarming.” – Karin Walser, Founder of Horton’s Kids – Winner of Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management

Project Schoolhouse Nicaragua

Project Schoolhouse is an international non-profit that focuses on education, clean water, and sanitation in rural Nicaraguan communities.

We work with communities that have identified both the problems they want to solve and the solutions to fix them.   Our purpose is to facilitate projects that have real grassroots support and local buy-in that result in sustainable progress. By tackling education, water, and sanitation issues simultaneously we help communities achieve more complete solutions to complex problems.

Through investment in schools, students, and communities, Project Schoolhouse helps rural communities in Nicaragua better advocate for themselves in changing regional economies and political systems. With an emphasis on community-building and local volunteer participation, Project Schoolhouse partners with recipient communities to build new schools, provide clean water, improve sanitation, and help students continue their educations.

Improving the quality of children’s education in rural communities is ever more important as rates of urbanization increase, global economic forces continually squeeze rural producers, and the growing technological requirements of doing business reach into the more remote regions of the world. Literacy and basic education are not luxuries, but represent crucial skills rural communities need in order to adequately advocate for themselves in changing economic and political environments.
